April 2012: BAA agrees to sell its 100% interest in Edinburgh Airport to GIP for £807.2 million.

February 2012: Edinburgh Airport launches a mobile app for passengers.

November 2011: Edinburgh Airport's busiest ever July with a record number of passengers passing through the airport.

September 2011: It is announced that BAA will sell Edinburgh Airport in response to the competition commission decision.

August 2011: Edinburgh Airport enjoys its busiest month ever! Just 7,000 passengers short of the of the one million mark.

August 2011: Jim O'Sullivan is appointed as the airport's new Managing Director.

July 2010: BAA appoints Kevin Brown as Managing Director of Edinburgh Airport.

September 2009: A study by Scottish Enterprise shows that the development of Edinburgh Airport could boost Scotland's economy by an astonishing £867 million per year.

September 2009: The Airbus A380, the world's largest commercial airliner, makes its first ever appearance in Scotland with a flight over Edinburgh Airport.

July 2009: Edinburgh Airport enjoys the busiest day in its 30 years, bucking a trend that has seen passenger numbers at most UK airports decline.

June 2009: 'Topping out' ceremony for the new departure lounge with Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy MP.

May 2009: New consolidated car rental centre opens.

December 2008: Work begins on a major departure lounge extension.

May 2007: Edinburgh Airport celebrates its 30th anniversary.

January 2007: David Johnson appointed Managing Director of Edinburgh Airport.

December 2006: Scotland's First Minister opens our new terminal extension.

June 2006: Ferrovial takes control of BAA and all our airports.

November 2005: New £10 million state-of-the-art air traffic control tower opens.

August 2005: We launch our outline masterplan.

May 2005: Noise assistance scheme is launched.

September 2004: New £20 million multi-storey car park opens, providing 2,000 additional spaces.

1977: The new terminal was officially opened to the public by the Queen.

1971: Edinburgh Airport is taken over by BAA (previously the British Airports Authority). Originally the airfield was the site of a First World War aerodrome, later to become RAF Turnhouse. The original facility was sited close to the main East Coast railway line and aircraft arrived in crates on trains, were assembled and sent into action from the grass strip. Turnhouse Aerodrome was established for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. For many years it fulfilled a military role before responsibility was handed from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Aviation in 1960.

1966: Separate body known as the British Airports Authority is set up. The organisation will remain government-owned until privatisation as BAA in July 1987.

1947: The first commercial services were launched in the 1947.

1916: The airport, now Scotland's busiest, started life as the Royal Naval Air Service aerodrome in March 1916. It was named Turnhouse, it was a key military base during World War One.
